Design & Planning
Our ecological design studio creates natural landscapes for homes, neighborhoods, parks, and public open spaces that cultivate an authentic sense of place.

What is Ecological Design?
Ecological Design happens where human creativity and natural systems meet…
Ecological Design applies the principles of ecology to landscape design and open space planning.
Ecological Designers create outdoor spaces for humans that also function as living ecosystems.
Ecological Designers usually design landscapes featuring native plants, natural planting patterns, and place-based (also known as “vernacular”) landscape features.
HOWEVER, Ecological Designers don’t just use native plants and create “wild-” looking gardens. Even highly-ornamental and orderly landscapes can operate like balanced ecosystems. What matters is the relationship between the land and the plants, wildlife, and people who use it.

Introducing the Deep Roots Studio…
Our designers are trained as landscape architects but have additional experience in habitat restoration, native plant ecology, community planning, and placemaking. The overlap of these skillsets is what makes us ecological designers.
Deep Roots is a true design-build landscape studio. Our full-time crews build what our designers help you imagine. Our design office is in the same location as our shop, and our designers collaborate closely with installation and maintenance crews (you’ll probably see us out there planting together!)
